12.04 here I come…

I posted a couple of weeks ago about an issue I was having with my Thinkpad L520 being unable to load Ubuntu 12.04 on the primary monitor.

I reported a bug in Launchpad, which was copied across to the bug tracker for Xorg. With some debugging help from the fantastic Bryce Harrington and Daniel Vetter I discovered that the bug I am encountering has been fixed in a Kernel branch as it is a common fault for the sandybridge graphics my laptop has. So now I have a laptop which will support running 12.04!

All of that said, the bug that I thought had gone away in 12.04 has appeared again. So I still need the ‘noapic’ flag to boot, but that’s better than not booting at all :)
I have a bug report for this if anyone is interested.

So, the steps for getting Ubuntu 12.04 running on a Thinkpad L520 are:

  1. Connect an External Monitor
  2. Boot into a LiveCD boot options (press a key when the first purple screen comes up)
  3. Select ‘noapic’ from the F6 boot options menu
  4. Boot into Ubuntu, and Install (the secondary monitor should be the only one working)
  5. Reboot after installation, hold down Shift after BIOS to get to GRUB and add ‘noapic’ into the boot options
  6. Once in Ubuntu, download and install the right kernel .deb files from
    http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-fixes/
  7. Reboot

I’m off to run a backup and then upgrade to 12.04 on my primary hard drive. Wish me luck!

One step forward, two steps back…

I’ve been following the development of Ubuntu 12.04 with interest, hoping that it would fix the annoying bug that affects the i7 chip in my laptop. In brief, the bug forces me to set the ‘noapic’ flag in the boot options before the machine will boot correctly. After a number of weeks of testing the live disk occasionally, I can happy report that the ‘noapic’ flag is no longer needed to book Ubuntu 12.04 on a ThinkPad L520 (with the SandyBridge i7).

But….

Now there is a new, and even more annoying bug which I have to wait to be fixed. Unlike the one above, which I could get around using a boot flag, I haven’t found a work-around for this one yet.

My primary laptop monitor doesn’t work.

When I boot into 12.04, the system boots correctly, but all I get is a black screen. I’ve plugged in an external monitor, and it displays without an issue on that, but it’s a laptop, so that’s not a practical solution. There are no extra drivers that I know of to be installed. I’m completely stuck, and unless it gets fixed, I’m not upgrading any time soon.

ThinkPad L520 Review

A couple of days ago I received my brand new Lenovo ThinkPad L520 laptop, and after using it for a couple of days I am really impressed with it. While I’ve been having trouble installing and keeping Ubuntu stable, the hardware itself is fantastic.

The short list of specifications are:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad L520
  • Intel Core i7 Processor
  • 6 GB DDR3 SDRAM
  • 15.6″ HD+ (1600×900)
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor graphics
  • 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm

My third ThinkPad (and my third laptop)

I got my first laptop 5-6 years ago, it was a second-hand ThinkPad R40. It was, and still is, a fantastic laptop – although it’s quite slow and clunky now. Around 3 years ago I decided the R40 was too old and bought a new laptop: a ThinkPad T61 (the T-series are the top-of-the-line models, while the R-series are the ). Another fantastic machine. It was another tough, well built laptop, and it also looked really nice (imho). But three months ago, it died. The graphics card basically melted – a known design flaw with the NVidia chip and board design (I don’t think Lenovo or NVidia decided whose fault it actually was).

I wanted to replace my T61 with a new T420, but it was going to be $3,000+ which I couldn’t afford, so I decided to wait and save up. But recently Lenovo had a sale on, and I noticed the L520. The L-series replaced the old R-series, and although they aren’t as thin or as styled as the T-series, I was still very interested. I checked the price for a fully-spec’ed machine, and got $1,000 with the discount. So I decided to buy it.

The ThinkPad Look

If you’ve seen a ThinkPad before, you know they are all black plastic, full of straight lines often with diagonals in the base, and lots of people think they look boring as they have very little (if any) “shiny” parts. The L520 is no exception, it’s made out of the usual high-quality non-shiny black plastic, it has the weird diagonals under the front and side, and I think it looks very professional and non-fancy (my way of not saying boring!). There is no brushed metal or shiny plastic anywhere, which is another plus.

Oh, and the most important part about a ThinkPad is the keyboard: it is, yet again, the most comfortable keyboard I’ve ever used (my R40 & T61 were the same), and it features the TouchPoint in the middle – the little red dot which is a mouse.

There is no mistaking it, this machine is a true ThinkPad.

How comfortable is it?

The black plastic that it’s made of is high quality plastic. It feels solid and comfortable under my hands, and has little give when pressure is applied. I’m sure you’ve handled some laptops which felt like they were going to break if you aren’t careful – this isn’t one of them. It feels solid and strong, and I have no doubts I can apply as much pressure as I like and it will take it. The screen hinges are huge and have been well designed, opening and closing the screen is very easy and smooth. There are no latches keeping it closed, but the little indent for the Battery and Suspend lights give an easy opening point.

The keyboard

The keyboard is fantastic. It’s the same design and feel as previous ThinkPads, and as such feels great. The keys are all in the right spots (except for the F-keys row, which will take some getting used to), and have feedback when you press them down. I’ve been using these keyboards for years now, and I was able to instantly able to touch-type on this one.

Under the keyboard is the trackpad, which is the one part of a ThinkPad which has never worked well – they have never made a decent one and as a I result I’ve never liked using them on any laptop. I’ve tried this one, and it feels ok. It’s large, responsive, pretty accurate, but I still keep brushing my palm across it when typing. So I have it turned off. Sorry Lenovo, you’ll have to keep working on that one.

Luckily, the L520 still has the TrackPoint which is, in my opinion, the best mouse/pointing device ever invented. Most people hate them, but that’s because most people have never used a ThinkPad TrackPoint, they’ve only used a bad attempt at copying it by another laptop maker! These things are great, they provide super accurate pointing and make it very easy to move the mouse around. One of the reasons for this is that they are located in the keyboard, so your hands never have to move from the keyboard to use the mouse – unlike the touchpad which requires moving the hand off the hand-rest. Without these, it wouldn’t be a ThinkPad.

Size and Weight

I got the T520 because it was the smallest model with the 15.6″ HD+ (1600×900) screen. The 14″ models have a 14.0″ HD (1366×768), which in my opinion is just pathetic. As a developer, I hate these new super-wide screens – vertical space is really important to me. My old T61 had a 14″ 1200×800 screen, and there were times when that wasn’t tall enough, so I wasn’t going to downgrade to a shorter screen. As a result, I had to get the 15.6″ model. Since it’s a super-wide screen, this laptop is quite wide (it only just fits into my laptop bag). There are large borders around the keyboard, into which they have put the volume controls (left) and the indicator lights (right).

It weighs almost 3KG, which is pretty heavy compared with a lot of laptops, and it is noticeable when you put it in a bag or carry it around for a while. But it’s not excessive, given it’s size. Since I’m a big guy, the weight isn’t a problem to me, but it would be for a small person who wants/needs a light laptop.

Subtle design choices

There are some very nice subtle design choices which add lots of nice touches to this laptop (not all are new or original):

  • The Microphone Mute, and Speaker Mute buttons have small lights under them which light up when the mutes are activated
  • The battery and suspend lights are down the front, visible when the lid is closed
  • The power button back light pulsates when the laptop is suspended
  • The arrow keys on the keyboard have been lowered slightly out of the keyboard, making them easy to find (typical ThinkPad design)
  • The Touchpad is covered in small dimples, so you can feel easily when your finger is on it or not without having to look

Software

It comes with Windows 7 installed by default, with all the usual ThinkPad utilities. I generated the Restore disks (incase I need Windows on it in the future) before proceeding to install Ubuntu… and failing. Ubuntu wouldn’t install without using some boot options. My theory is that there is some new hardware component/design/change in the L520 which isn’t yet supported on Ubuntu/Linux. My hope is that this will be resolved in the upcoming 11.10 release, but if not, hopefully next year. For now, it’s enough to say that when Ubuntu is running, it’s very fast and responsive and looks great on this screen.

What it’s missing

There are two things that were in my T61 that the L520 is missing, both are standard in the T-series but not in the L-series:

  • Keyboard LED Light – the T-series has a small LED in the top of the screen which shines onto the keyboard to light it up at night (when you turn it on). This is a fantastic feature, and I spent many nights using it late at night. I already miss it.
  • Ultra-slim expansion bay – the T-series have a really thin expansion bay, into which goes your CD drive, second drive, etc. The L-series have the thicker one. The only problem here is that I have a harddrive caddy for the ultra-slim models, so it won’t work with my L520 :(

Summary

I really like this laptop. It looks great, feels great, and (mostly) runs really well. As a replacement for my T61, this L520 is almost perfect. If you like your ThinkPad’s, but can’t afford a new T-series, then give the L-series a go.

Installing Ubuntu 11.04 on a ThinkPad L520…

UPDATE #2: I have added a page onto my blog where I will post my troubleshooting notes for dealing with Ubuntu 11.04 on the ThinkPad L520.

My new ThinkPad L520 arrived yesterday, to replace my dead ThinkPad T61 . (I will write a review about it soon, but for those who want the quick specs: i7 processor, 6GB RAM, integrated graphics.)

Naturally my first step was to install Ubuntu, so I created a USB boot disk with 11.04 amd64 Desktop and booted up the laptop. I told it to use the USB stick as first boot device and let it do it’s thing… and waited… and waited…

I ended up with a blank screen with the dreaded flashing cursor in the top left corner. Not fun.

I downloaded the Alternate CD, it had the same issue. I was beginning to worry that my laptop had some new hardware which Linux doesn’t support. So I tried the i386 version, just in case there was an issue with the 64 bit edition, and it worked. So I could just use the i386 version, but my system has 6GB RAM and the System Monitor was only reporting 3GB worth. Again, not fun.

My next step was to check online for solutions, and I found a couple of ideas but none of them solved the issue. I found an interesting article about the new “Sandy Bridge” architecture of the new Intel processors, which I am guessing has something to do with it. The article mentions compiling from git, but that would involve having an installed system to start with…

I then decided to try an Oneiric daily disk, to see if it has the new drivers I need. No luck with this one, I had the same issue.

Another idea was to try and install 10.04.2 LTS and upgrade to 11.04 from that. 10.04 installed easily, although it was lacking support for the widescreen and wireless card. I then ran the upgrade process to 10.10, rebooted, and it broke. No Fair! Checking the Kernel options I found two installed Kernels, and tried the older one in the hope that it would work. It did… sort of. Although the GUI wouldn’t work, it did let me into the Terminal.

Kernels available in 10.10:
BLANK SCREEN – 2.6.35-30-generic
CONSOLE ONLY – 2.6.32-28-generic

I have no run out of ideas… but I will keep playing and see what I can come up with.

During this process I posted online asking for help in a number of locations: AskUbuntu, Lenovo Forums & Launchpad.

Update #1:

After some suggestions on AskUbuntu, I found that setting either of these boot options got the installer starting: acpi=off, noapic & nolapic.

I had to enable these for the installer, and then in GRUB as well so I could continue to boot. The process I followed is:

  1. Boot your computer with a Ubuntu live disk
  2. On the Desktop CD, you need to click a button (I hit the space bar) when the first purple screen comes up with the weird white logo at the bottom
  3. On the Alternate CD, it should by default go into the launcher options
  4. Within the launcher options, click F6 and select one of the options in the menu on the bottom right (I used noapic)
  5. Press the Esc key to close the menu
  6. Press Enter to Install the system
  7. Once the system is installed, reboot
  8. When the BIOS screen is showing, hold down the Shift key until the GRUB menu comes up
  9. Click the E key on your keyboard
  10. Find the boot line (should have ‘quiet splash‘ on that line)
  11. Put the option you used in that line (I used noapic)
  12. Press Ctrl-X to boot
  13. Ubuntu should boot up successfully, but we need to update GRUB to always use that option
  14. Login to Ubuntu and load up the terminal
  15. Edit the GRUB configuration file: sudo vim /etc/default/grub
  16. Edit this line, adding your chosen option: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”
    1. Mine looks like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash noapic”
  17. Run the Update GRUB command to save the change: sudo update-grub
  18. You should be good :)

That is the method which worked for me – I make no claims that it will work for you too. Also beware, this could break your laptop.
